Motorola Reach GSM Network Solutions to Connect Next Billion Mobile Users!

2/13/2006

Motorola Inc. launched Motorola Reach, a portfolio of  GSM network solutions aimed at enabling telecom operators to connect the next billion mobile subscribers by 2010.  This portfolio of affordable wireless platforms is designed to allow providers in both 'high growth' and more mature economies
across the world to offer services in both densely populated and remote, rural locations.  The new network offering complements Motorola's broad mass market portfolio, which is specifically designed to address the diverse needs and desires of consumers in emerging markets and around the world.

The Motorola Reach solutions feature small-footprint GSM base stations for rural connectivity, backhaul offerings for transmission, a Softswitch-based core including media gateway for lower call transport costs, and alternative power sources, including solar, wind and innovative liquid propane gas (LPG) solutions.  While relevant to high growth markets, the solutions also offer value to operators in more mature economies where the average revenue per user (ARPU) is decreasing and who face issues of optimizing networks, coping with traffic surges, and maintaining networks as cost-efficiently as possible.

"Now that the global mobile industry has reached more than 2 billion subscribers(1), research has demonstrated that in emerging markets, every increase of 10 mobile phones per 100 people can boost a nation's GDP by 0.6 percent per year(2)," said Jose R. Figueroa, corporate vice president and
regional manager Europe, Middle East & Africa Region and Latin America & Caribbean Region, Motorola Networks.

"Motorola has firsthand experience in market dynamics facing both emerging and more mature geographies, and using that expertise, has created the Motorola Reach GSM portfolio to address issues such as achieving a low cost- per-subscriber ratio, serving both dense and sparsely-populated areas, and maintaining consistent service quality," Figueroa continued.
