Alltel offers wireless GPS vehicle tracking for business customers

Feb. 27, 2006

Alltel will combine forces with Navtrak and Telogis, leading providers of fleet management systems, to enable business customers to track their vehicles and other equipment using GPS technology and Alltel's expansive wireless network.

"Because the business world is so fast-paced and competitive, companies need the ability to track their vehicles in near real-time," said Wade McGill, senior vice president of wireless product management for Alltel. "By combining the speed of the Alltel Axcess MobileLink network with the expertise of these two fleet management vendors, we can enable customers to locate and monitor their vehicles across a national footprint."

Navtrak and Telogis work this way: A mobile device installed in each vehicle captures signals from GPS satellites to determine the vehicle's location, direction and speed, and then relays that information over Alltel's Axcess MobileLink network to the Navtrak or Telogis network operations center. The information is immediately transmitted to the customer via the Internet and also stored for later retrieval.
