Kenyans can now enjoy the
services of a mobile television following the launch
of the service by Safaricom and DSTV.
However consumers will be
required to acquire mobile phones configured to
receive DVB-H broadcast at a cost of 25,000
shillings and a monthly subscription fee of one
thousand shillings from the first of July.
The subscription is being offered
freely until June 30.
The service will initially
be available in Nairobi through 10 local channels
including KBC and international channels and
customers can also access entertainment-based
websites.
Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph says
the launch signifies a revolutionary step in the
mobile market and the development of both the mobile
service provider and Multichoice.
"We have been working on this
partnership for the past one year and today's launch
finally delivers what we have been promising our
subscribers all along-unequivocal audio visual
content streamed to your mobile phone handset in a
simple manner", said Joseph.
DMTV Chief Finance Officer
Nicolas Katsikides termed the launch as a proud
moment as Kenya becomes one of the few countries in
Africa to launch mobile television.
"I would like to thank the Kenya
Broadcasting Corporation and Safaricom for the
assistance and support they have given us in making
all this possible", he said.
